The ASCA Story

Nurturing Your Creative Spirit

Australian School for Creative arts was founded by Artist and Art Teacher Sunari Sooriaaratchi in 2018 with the idea of giving children and adults the opportunity to be creative and express themselves in a variety of mediums. Through a gentle guided approach, children and adults develop a passion for creative pursuits while honing their skills and learning various art and craft practices. The benefits for children and adults alike include creative problem solving, collaboration and increased wellbeing.

The story began when Sunari arrived in Australia in 2012 and began looking for an art school similar to the one she had grown up with overseas and had subsequently taught at. She was looking for a place to send her 3 year old son for similar creative experiences. She couldn't find any that matched what she had in mind, and began to think about creating her own. Subsequent study of Fine Art at Monash University, and employment within the Faculty, as well as personal illness, led Sunari to conduct research into using art as a therapeutic practice. The results of her research and their positive reception within her peer community led her to create Australian School for Creative Arts.

Classes run on weeknights and on Saturdays. Fees are direct debited and allow students access to ongoing classes (including during school holidays). This model of art education is based on a continuous course structure which allows children and adults alike to access a plethora of skills and techniques, and to build upon and develop the skills they have learned through studio practice as they grow and develop.

The course is structured so that children as well as adult students have the ability to return to materials and processes year on year and approach them from a more mature standpoint as they grow and develop into healthy, further educated individuals with a multi-faceted skill set. The cognitive skills gained through art are applicable to all fields of work and life, outside of art. The ASCA approach is non-assessment based and skill-focused allowing those who wish to pursue a career in the visual or applied arts a head start into their chosen field and the ability to gain the skills necessary to put together a great portfolio of work for further study opportunities as well as to strengthen their existing art practice .
